As a fitness and leisure apprentice you’re going to be learning on the job. Every day you’ll gain practical experience to fit your role – whether that’s communicating, assessing and motivating your clients as a PT, or providing first-rate customer service in the day-to-day running of a leisure facility.

The new Apprenticeship Standards have been created with sectors employers, so you can be sure that you're learning the knowledge and practical skills employers' really value. In the last five years over 3,000 apprentices have trained with us.

Level 2 Fitness Instructor

Duration:
230-250hrs (with 157-164 hrs of guided learning)

As a fitness instructor, you’ll help clients get active through gym-based exercise.

You’ll need to know all about anatomy and physiology (the heart and circulatory system, the respiratory system, posture and core strength – that’s just for starters). You’ll also need to know how to maintain health, safety and welfare in a variety of fitness environments, including the safeguarding of children and vulnerable adults.

On this apprenticeship you’ll develop the communication skills and motivation techniques to support your clients to achieve their goals. You’ll gain experience in planning and instructing gym-based activities for a variety of different groups of people: children, older adults, ante and postnatal clients and disabled clients.

Level 2 Leisure Operations

Duration:
180 hrs (111 of guided learning)

This apprenticeship qualification is designed for sport and leisure assistants, attendants, lifeguards or other front-line positions.

You’ll learn all about: customer care and diversity, as well as sales techniques and best-practice customer service. How you present yourself also reflects on your company, so make sure you give the right impression. You’ll also learn technical knowledge vital to your role: health, safety, security and welfare, pool lifeguarding, the safe use and maintenance of leisure equipment, cleaning and pool testing.

Level 3 Personal Training

Duration:
15 months

As a Personal Trainer, you’ll coach clients (on a one-to-one and small group basis) towards their health and fitness goals.

You’ll develop personalised plans for clients and motivate them to keep taking positive steps in their overall health and wellbeing.

You’ll learn about the body – anatomy and physiology, nutrition and factors impacting on health and wellbeing. You’ll learn about psychology – how to keep your clients motivated. You’ll learn about best-practice approaches to exercise – how to design rounded exercise programmes and exercise techniques. And you’ll develop the professional skills for success –communication, IT and business acumen.

Level 3 Leisure Duty Manager

As a Leisure Duty Manager, you’re responsible for the day-to-day operation of a leisure facility.

A busy and varied role. Leisure facilities can be large and offer a varied portfolio of activities: swimming pools, multi-functional sports hall, fitness suites, crèche, children’s soft play, health suites, climbing walls and outdoor sports tracks.

It’s on you to ensure that everything is ready for the planned activities – and that the highest standards of cleanliness, security and operational effectiveness are met. As well as championing customer service you’ll assist the General Manager with maintaining systems and records, to ensure compliance with industry regulations, health and safety and business protocols.
