House of Lords’ social mobility inquiry – our response

We helped with a Parliamentary investigation exploring the choices available to young people transitioning into work.

What are choices available to 14-24 years old when they come to transition from school into work?

To find out more on this subject the House of Lords’ Social Mobility Committee posed a number of questions and invited a response. The following are our answers to these questions, delivered through our operation YMCA Training.

They drew from our experience as one of the largest voluntary-sector training providers in the country, working with some of the most troubled young people in society.

We also suggested a number of policy changes. Changes that we believe will improve the chances of many young people in their search for a meaningful career.

The current system as a whole does not adequately support young people who do not follow the A-Level and higher education route

Following the consultation period, our response and others were fed into the Social Mobility Committee’s report: 'Overlooked and Left Behind: improving the transition from school to work for the majority of young people' [PDF], published on 8 April 2016.
