Do you want to work in the open-air creating spaces that people can enjoy? Every green space needs to be skilfully maintained and careers in horticulture are more wide-ranging than you may think.
As a gardener and landscaper, you might find yourself planning and maintaining large gardens, parks and other green spaces. But you can also specialise in green spaces that are used for sport, think golf greens and sports pitches - these require extensive skilled maintenance to make playing conditions are just right.
The new Apprenticeship Standards have been created with sectors employers, so you can be sure that you're learning the knowledge and practical skills employers' really value. In the last five years over 3,000 apprentices have trained with us.

As an apprentice Golf Greenkeeper you’ll care for the overall appearance of a golf course, maintaining a good quality playing surface and ensuring a challenging and enjoyable experience for golfers.
You’ll become an expert in the four key turfgrass areas on a golf course – greens, tees, fairways and areas of rough, each of which requires a different type of maintenance.
Alongside core technical skills in landscape maintenance, you can expect to develop your practical knowledge of: plant series and habitat development, soil cultivation, irrigation, workplace health and safety (the correct use of gardening tools and machinery) and how to handle and apply pesticides safely.
This Apprenticeship Standard qualification has been designed by sector leaders and employers, so you can be sure that it meets the needs of the modern golfing leisure industry. Designed by: England Golf, British and International Golf Greenkeepers Association and eight UK-based clubs in the UK.

As a horticulture apprentice you’ll learn all about plants in a practical hands-on way.
- Which plants will thrive in which environment?
- How is a particular species grown and what planting techniques should you use?
- How can you develop and maintain the landscape?
You can expect to develop your practical knowledge of: soil cultivation, irrigation, workplace health and safety (the correct use of gardening tools and machinery), first aid training and how to handle and apply pesticides safely.
One pathway specialises in plant propagation, planting and aftercare, the other in landscaping, landscape materials and construction and maintenance.

Level 2 Sports Turf Operative

A Sports Turf Operative, who is also sometimes called a Groundsman, maintains and renovates sports surfaces to make sure that public and private sports facilities are available for use.
The career is as varied as the country’s leisure facilities; you could find yourself working across a wide range of different sports and venues, including athletics, bowls, cricket, croquet, football, hockey, horse racing, rugby league and union, tennis and ranging from general parks type sports surfaces up to first class stadia.
This Apprenticeship Standard qualification has been designed by 16 employers and industry leaders, so you can be sure that it meets the needs of the modern leisure industry. Designed by: Cheltenham Racecourse, Tottenham Hotspur Football Club and Leeds Cricket Football and Athletics Club (amongst others).
