YMCA Manifesto sets out proposals to build healthier communities
This week saw the Parliamentary launch of the YMCA Manifesto. The manifesto sets out a number of key policy recommendations in areas which the YMCA works including: physical activity, housing and accommodation, education and training; and support for families. Among the recommendations, the YMCA is calling for the next Government to recognise the important role physical activity can play in preventative healthcare, and as a cost effective treatment for health conditions, including obesity, heart disease and mental health issues.
It also demands that the Olympic Games leave a lasting health legacy by continuing to inspire children and young people to participate in sport and physical activities.
Norman Lamb MP, Natascha Engel MP,
Mark Harrod,
Stewart Jackson MP
The manifesto launch was hosted by a number of MPs from across the party political divide including Dawn Butler MP, Minister for Youth Engagement; Stewart Jackson MP, Conservative Spokesperson for Communities and Local Government; and Norman Lamb MP, Liberal Democrat Health Spokesperson.
Mark Harrod, Director of Policy and Public Affairs, Central YMCA and member of the YMCA National Board hosted the event on behalf of the YMCA. He was joined by a number of Chief Executives from other YMCAs across England. Mark said: “The YMCA manifesto sets out what we would like to see the next Government achieve across all of the areas in which the YMCA operates. We are delighted that so many MPs and prospective MPs attended and we hope to work with them to realise many of the proposals we are putting forward, to help the YMCA continue to build stronger, healthier and more resilient young people and communities”.
