What does YMCA stand for ?

YMCA stands for Young Men’s Christian Association, which is exactly what it was when founded in 1844, however, as early as 1849 London YMCA decided to open its doors to ‘associate members’ described in the minute books of the day as ‘those who are not necessarily Christians but are of good moral character’. Things moved rapidly for the YMCA movement and today you certainly do not have to be young, a man or a Christian to be part of the Y, either as a member, a client or as an employee or volunteer.
